The Mental Ecosystem of a Writer
Writing is certainly a craft. The more versatile you are with language, the better you will be at your work. Spending an hour or two a day just reading up on the language will certainly help. It doesn’t have to be about any specific topic, any book will do. As long as you keep exposing yourself to new ideas, new styles and usages of languages, your facility with language will increase, and along with it, your writing skills. Keeping your mind open is one of the hallmarks of a good writer.
A famous writer, on the other hand, is a different creature. The famous writer is a political animal in the world of literature. His writing may only be average, his facility and understanding of language may even be sub par, but as long as he has a large controllable network of writers under his wing, he is the famous one. You will find this writer common enough in free online writing sites or free story sites, giving invaluable advice to new writers with little confidence as of yet in their writing.
The best online writing sites, however, will have few of these famous writers. This site will be composed of authors who have the need to share their insights with people best suited to understand them – mostly other writers too. This promotes a kind of incestuous relationship if unchecked – the same ideas will percolate round and round, so it is best to keep reading about other topics that may not really interest you, just to keep your mental ecosystem as balanced as possible.
